Editorial Policy

Last updated 1 September 2026

This page explains who produces the material on this site, what standards it is held to, how mistakes get fixed, and how the site pays for itself. If any of it is not being honoured, we would like to hear about it.

Who writes this

Everything on emotionalagetest.com is written and edited by The Emotional Age Test Editorial Team, a small editorial group working under The Ephoria Store. We are writers and editors with a background in explanatory non-fiction, not licensed clinicians, and we think it matters that we say so on the page rather than implying otherwise through vague credentials.

We do not publish under invented author personas, we do not attach fabricated qualifications to articles, and we do not describe ourselves as therapists, psychologists, or medical professionals. Where an article needs clinical authority, we cite the researchers and clinicians who have it, by name, and link the reader to their work rather than borrowing it.

Articles here draw on developmental psychology, emotion-regulation research, and the emotional intelligence literature, including work by Erik Erikson, John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, Peter Salovey and John Mayer, Daniel Goleman, James Gross, and Lisa Feldman Barrett. We are readers of that work, not researchers in it.

How we use research

Every substantive claim about how minds or relationships work should trace back to published work. In practice that means the following.

A note about the frameworks we use

"Emotional age" is not a clinical construct and no research literature measures it directly. It is our framing device for a set of capacities that are separately well studied: emotion regulation, empathic accuracy, conflict behaviour, boundary setting, emotional granularity, and distress tolerance. We use the phrase because it is intuitive, and we say plainly on the test and throughout the site that it is a reflective framing rather than a measurement.

What we will not claim

There are a few lines we hold deliberately, because this subject area makes it easy to cross them without noticing.

How pages are reviewed and updated

Each article is checked before publication against the sources it cites, for three things specifically: that the finding is described accurately, that its limits are stated, and that no number appears without a source behind it.

Published pages carry a visible publication date and, where they have been revised, a modified date in the page metadata. We revisit articles when we become aware of an error, when the underlying research has moved, or when a reader tells us something is unclear or wrong. Substantive changes are made to the page itself rather than quietly appended, so the page a reader lands on is the current version.

Corrections

We get things wrong. When we do, we would rather know.

If you believe something on this site is inaccurate, misattributed, or misleading, email support@ephoria.store with the page and the specific claim. We read everything sent to that address. Where a correction is warranted we make it and update the modified date on the page. Where we disagree, we will tell you why rather than ignoring the message.

This applies to the quizzes as well as the articles. If a question is ambiguous, a result feels mis-scored, or a description reads as unfair, that is useful feedback and it has changed our wording before.

Our position on AI-generated content

We use software in the production process the way most publishers now do: for drafting assistance, for research retrieval, for checking our own consistency, and for building the site itself. We are not going to pretend otherwise, because that claim is unverifiable and the honest version is more useful to you.

What we will commit to is the part that actually matters: every article is read, edited, fact-checked against its sources, and signed off by a human before it is published. Nothing on this site is generated and posted unread. Claims are verified against the cited work rather than accepted because they sound plausible, and the framing, structure, and judgement calls in each piece are editorial decisions made by people.

Our test for any page is not how it was drafted. It is whether it is accurate, whether it is genuinely useful to the person who searched for it, and whether we would be comfortable defending every sentence in it.

How this site is funded

Emotional Age Test is free to use, has no signup, no paywall, and no email capture. It is funded by display advertising, served by third-party ad networks.

What this site is not

This is an educational and self-reflection site. It is not a mental health service, it does not provide therapy, and nothing on it constitutes medical or psychological advice or creates a professional relationship of any kind.

A low result on our test is not a diagnosis of anything, and emotional maturity is not a fixed property of a person. If you are struggling with emotion regulation to a degree that is affecting your work, relationships, or wellbeing, a qualified therapist can help far more than a website can.

If you are in crisis or at risk of harming yourself, please contact your local emergency services or a crisis line in your region. A website cannot help with that, and it would be irresponsible of us to imply otherwise.

Who writes the articles on this site?

The Emotional Age Test Editorial Team, a small editorial group working under The Ephoria Store. We are writers and editors rather than licensed clinicians, and we state that openly rather than implying clinical credentials we do not have.

Where clinical authority is needed, we cite the researchers who have it by name and point readers to their published work.

Are the quizzes on this site scientifically validated?

No. They are educational self-reflection exercises informed by published research, not psychometrically validated instruments. They have not been normed against a standardised sample and their results are not comparable to clinical measures.

What they can do is give you accurate vocabulary for a pattern, which is a well-supported first step toward changing your relationship with it.

How do I report an error?

Email support@ephoria.store with the page URL and the specific claim you think is wrong. We read every message sent there. Where a correction is warranted we make it on the page and update the modified date; where we disagree, we will explain why rather than ignore it.

Is this site written by AI?

We use software in the production process, as most publishers now do, including for drafting assistance and research retrieval. Every article is then read, edited, fact-checked against its cited sources, and approved by a human before publication.

Nothing here is generated and posted unread. We judge a page by whether it is accurate and useful, not by which tools were involved in producing it.

How does this site make money?

Display advertising only. There is no paywall, no signup, no email capture, no affiliate links, and no sponsored content. Advertisers have no input into what we publish.

Your quiz answers are computed in your browser and never stored or transmitted. Full details are in our privacy policy.
